JPEG XR format approved

JPEG XR format approved
The Joint Photographic Experts Committee, which regulates the JPEG image-compression standard, has approved the JPEG XR format.

JPEG XR is based on Microsoft’s HD Photo specification, which provides higher compression efficiency, truer images, an extended colour palette, improved tone and better in-camera editing options.

The approval follows Microsoft’s agreement to open up the format, so that it would be as neutral as its predecessor. The company had previously wished to retain some proprietary control over the format.

The adoption of JPEG XR is supported by major camera makers and software vendors such as Hasselblad and Adobe.

The new standard will not be available until it has been brought in line with JPEG’s standardisation requirements, which could take up to year to achieve.
