In the face of rampant software piracy in China, Microsoft has cut the price of its Vista operating system in the country by more than half.

Microsoft has dropped the price of the Home Basic edition of the operating system from 1,521 yuan to 499 yuan, while the Home Premium package price fell from 1,802 yuan to 899 yuan.

The company hopes that the move will discourage people from turning to pirated versions of Vista in China.

According to research firm International Data Corp, China used 82% pirated software in 2006, down from 86% in 2005.

In early 2006, China introduced a mandate requiring computer-manufacturers to install legal versions of operating system software at the factory. This led to increased sales of legitimate software.

At the end of June 2007 Microsoft had sold 60 million Windows Vista licences globally, including 20 million copies sold since mid-May.
