Google FriendRank: fire ads at your friends

by Brian Turner

Hat tip to Hugo Guzman for bringing our attention to a Google patent for displaying ads – based on social groups.

A computer-implemented method for displaying advertisements to members of a network comprises identifying one or more communities of members, identifying one or more influencers in the one or more communities, and placing one or more advertisements at the profiles of one or more members in the identified one or more communities.

In other words, find a the influencer in a group of friends, and pay him/her to place ads on their profile.

Funnily enough, Saad Kamal notes that Jeremy Zawodny had a similar idea a few years ago.
