Google reveals search volume figures

UPDATE: July 9th 2008 - I’m now seeing the figures live myself - here’s a screenshot for a generic search for “insurance”.

Google search data is something we’ve all wanted to see for years, but had to contend with less accurate proxies such as Wordtracker and the Overture keyword suggestion tool. Now Google gives it free.

Barry and Tamar both post how Google have been seen to give approximate figures with keyword search volume in the Adwords keyword suggestion tool.

Barry posts about seeing seeing numbers for SEO keyword research in the US, while Tamar saw insurance keyword volume data when searching in Asia.

Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to see this live as yet here in the UK, but the fact that different people at opposite ends of the earth have seen the same thing suggests this could even become a permanent fixture within the Google tool.

Certainly with the demise of the Overture keyword suggestion tool, there’s a gap in the market.

And as the Google keyword suggestion tool is centered on increasing advertiser reach and spend, perhaps actual figures are being tested in order to help monetise Adwords further.

Certainly with the roll out of Google’s Ad Planner, which can provide seriously detailed information on site targeting, we could be about to see a new push by Google on Adwords.

ADDED: Also spotted here, and there is now a Google Help page for search volume stats here: What should I know about the Keyword Tool’s search volume statistics?

Brian, what’s your initial thinking on the accuracy of these search volumes?
I’ve seen a post or two questioning it.

I actually spent much of today looking into that - the values are sets, not individual - which harks back to an unusual observation I’ve had for years about different keywords ranking under different critieria according to their search volume:
Different Google algos for different keywords
