Lisa Barone provides excellent detailed coverage on the “Give it up” session at SMX Advanced 2008, where various advanced SEO’s revealed their secret advanced SEO strategies - much of it blackhat.

Speakers who covered this session included Stephan Spencer, Marty Weintraub, Michael Gray, Rob Kerry, Todd Friesen, and Rand Fishkin - some of the real heavyweights of the industry.

Techniques revealed include:

1. Conditional redirects
2. Datamining
3. Proxy servers for cloaking
4. Nofollow link exchanges
5. Fake visits to social media
6. Micro Site Creation
7. Automated Content
8. On Topic Spamming
9. Steal old blogs
10. Hotlink
11. Custom 404 pages
12. Google Removal Tool competitors out
13. Google Bowling
14. Google Local Ranking Tips

The darker techniques are quite mind boggling, but most people can probably rest assured that so long as they aren’t working in pills, porn, or casinos, then they’ll probably never have to face much of these.

There are some real gems in Lisa’s coverage, though, and the following are worth highlighting:

1. Stephan Spencer says that short URLs get clicked on twice as often as long URLs. Even more, he says that long URLs are actually a deterrent to clicking, drawing attention away from the original listing and onto the listing below it. According to Stephen, the site listed below a long URL’d site will get clicked on 2.5x more frequently.

2. Michael Gray apparently made a brilliant set of pointers demonstrating that Adwords Quality Scoring has nothing to do with your landing page - but instead to do with your organic rankings. The better you do organically, the better your quality score will be. He proves the point with real life examples, and then delivers a coup de grace by setting up a ringtones PPC campaign to the Whitehouse website to prove that quality scoring has nothing to do with the page targeted and everything to do with trust.

Overall, whether you engage in dark practices or advanced SEO, it’s definitely educational to find out what’s happening on the cutting edge of SEO - and two pointers above have amazing value anyone can learn from them.
