Yahoo!’s Connected Life division has secured major phone distribution deals in a strategy to expand its mobile advertising market.
The company expects advertising on mobile phones to become as important as web advertising, and is entering partnerships with device makers and network operators.
Yahoo! already offers a mobile search service, and hopes partnerships with handset manufacturers will lead to deals with network operators on ad-supported services.
Yahoo!’s plan to push its service via distribution deals contrasts with Google’s current focus on its Android mobile software platform.
Google is also partnering with handset makers and network operators, with the first phones based on Android slated to appear in the second half of 2008.
Yahoo! has already secured deals with most major handset makers, including HTC, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung Electronics, to feature Yahoo! search, email and mapping services on limited handsets.
Major carriers have also partnered with Yahoo!, including Vodafone, Hutchison Whampoa and Telefonica, plus operators in Southeast Asia and India.
