As Southern England records its driest month since 1976, Envirowise, a government-supported efficiency programme, is advising UK firms to stop wasting water.

British industry uses 1,300 million cubic metres a year, which according to Envirowise, is three times more than necessary. Programme director Dr Martin Gibson said there would be “serious implications” if firms ignored advice to reduce their consumption. He said that water costs would rise if demand continued to exceed supply, causing a drain on profits as well as on the environment.

Dr Gibson said water wastage occurred both in industrial and office environments. He advised workers to adopt the kind of simple, water-efficient practices householders were using at home, such as turning off taps while brushing teeth.

According to Envirowise, firms could reduce their annual water consumption by 30%, just by implementing simple conservation tactics. Businesses can also gain tax relief for investing in technologies that promote efficient water use.
