IBM has released a preview version of a new mashup tool which allows businesses to remix information and data from different sources to create new applications.
IBM’s Mashup Starter Kit is available at its AlphaWorks site in preview version, and will be available commercially in the first quarter of 2008 for Windows, Linux, and possibly other platforms.
The Mashup Starter Kit includes the IBM Mashup Hub. This is a mashup server which stores RSS, Atom, or XML data feeds and enables them to be manipulated.
The starter kit works with IBM’s QEDWiki mashup creation tool, which allows users to link data sources to create a single view of information.
The applications allow users to create business applications without the need for any programming knowledge.
Information produced in the Mashup Hub can be assembled in QEDWiki. New applications can be built that combine business information from sources such as enterprise databases, with data from other sources, such as the web, to create applications which address specific business needs.
IBM is currently working with a major telecommunications company to combine information about orders with Google Maps, in order to create a visual presentation of operations.
