Webmasters across the internet are reporting that Google Search broken. This appears to be linked with a major change in how Google collects data.
Dubbed “Big Daddy”, the system involved taking a snapshot of internet pages onto Google’s servers – where data about what those pages contain could be explored more efficiently, saving bandwidth for Google.
However, it appears that since the new system was rolled out earlier this year, a range of problems have arisen.
Key problems reported involve:
-
1. Google is unable to find new pages on websites
2. Google has lost its records of many websites
3. Google instead is returning pages removed years ago
4. Irrelevant search results
Webmasters have raised various discussions on internet communities, and this problems are being seen across different industries.
According to a report by the International Herald Tribune, Google CEO Eric Schmidt admitted to a server crisis – Google is having problems storing all the data it processes.
eWeek reports that Google founder Larry Page admitted yesterday that the problems have taken the company by surprise.
The overall problem isn’t simply that websites and their pages keep disappearing and re-appearing in search results – it’s Google’s dominance of the online search market.
This is especially the case in the UK, where Google commands over 75% of all search queries.
Meaning that when Google breaks, the ability for people in the UK to find meaningful information online – and the companies that need to be found by them – becomes seriously disrupted.
There is no word yet from Google about an estimated time for the search engine to be fixed.
Meanwhile, Google has launched a scheme to try and get people to help edit its search results, and has also announced that online advertising bonuses will be scrapped.
They’ve also recently courted the press, to help them report on Google in a pro-Google manner, dazzling with them with a couple of new product and turning attention from Google Search problems.
