Evening Standard brain farts URLs

by Brian Turner

The London Evening Standard is the latest major site I’ve seen to cock up its URLs.

At present, the business news front page looks like this: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-business/

But if I try to click through the link to the story about the US considering a $2500 billion bail out, I get the following URL – which simply reloads the business news front page again.

URL rewrite cock up, by any chance?

I’m sure we’ve all been there on our own sites, but you’d think that traditional media would be paying webdev companies a lot of money to prevent such things happening.

Still, it’s not just the London Evening Standard who have problems – a while back I posted about how the Belfast Telegraph allowed its domain to expire.

After trying to warn them about this, I was basically told to get lost by their angry IT dept. A few days later, the domain expired, and the site went offline. Good job, boys.

Interesting you should mention web developers in traditional print. Jeff Jarvis has suggested that traditional newspapers concentrate on what they do best (ie: journalism) and outsource everything else.

That’s all great, unless of course you’re outsourcing to muppets!
