Microsoft has squashed growing rumours that the release of Windows Server 2008 could be delayed into 2008. On its Server Division blog, the company says that it is fully on track to release the product to manufacturing in the second half of 2007.

The Windows Server 2008 operating system, formerly known as Longhorn Server, has recently been made available in beta, with 100,000 downloads made since the end of April.

Analysts expect Viridian, a virtualisation application, to by a key element of the final product. The product also has improved control and security features.

Virtualisation is expected to be an important tool for CIOs, helping them to make better use of assets.
