Microsoft is planning to release a tool which will help business users improve the security of Office 2007.
The Office 2007 Security Guide will be launched today, at the Microsoft TechEd conference in Barcelona.
It will provide a detailed description of the security settings available in Office 2007 together with Group Policy Object Accelerator - a tool to enable security policies to be set-up and managed through Active Directory.
Office 2007 offers the ability to control security settings at a granular level, compared with previous versions of the software, where security settings were much broader.
There are 1,500 settings in Office 2007, 300 of which relate to security. Each of the 300 security settings can be adjusted to meet the user’s needs.
The software provides ‘trusted folders’ for documents which are pre-approved to use macros, which are a potential security risk. Macros can also be allowed in Excel only, or just for employees in a specified group.
The software also allows administrators to block access to certain web services.
