Simon Dury, business partnerships director of the Envirowise Project, has advised firms to choose IT equipment that can be re-used, with easily replaceable parts, rather than recycled.
Envirowise is a UK government project which provides free advice to businesses on environomental issues.
Speaking at a Green Computing in Practice roundtable, Dury said that IT equipment could also be donated to developing countries, but companies must ensure that these countries can benefit from the technology.
Technology that does not work, or is difficult to service, should not be sent to developing countries, where the infrastructure to support and repair the technology may not even be available.
Dury also called for IT project managers to consider the environmental impact at the design stage of a project.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive comes into force in 2007, with the aim of encouraging companies to recycle and reuse their old IT equipment.
