RFID tags vulnerable to virus attack

by Brian Turner

Security

Radio Frequency ID tags – aka RFID – are smart barcodes using radio signals, that allow for easy tracking of goods from suppliers to distributors to consumers.

Made from a tiny computer chip and radio emitter, they are expected to eventually replace barcodes.

Unfortunately, they’ve also been proven now to be as vulnerable to virus attacks as any other computing system.

In addition to this, F-Secure point out that they can be used as a vector to spread viruses and corrupt corporate databases.

While it remains easrly days for RFID, the demonstration that they are vulnerable should come as a wake-up call for RFID development.

However, despite the warnings, if history is anything to go by, we’re not going to see the end of this subject – not by a longshot.
