HD DVD & Blu Ray

Researchers with Warner Bros. have filed for a patent that allows a single DVD disc to store multiple high definition DVD formats.

The resultant disc would allow standard DVD storage - in addition to also storing both rival High Definition DVD formats, Blu Ray and HD DVD.

The disc would allow this to happen by having three different recordable/playable levels on the disc.

This works because both high definition DVD formats record and play at a different level from each other.

The move could be a godsend - not simply for consumers - but also for film studios and video game makers, who are present are being forced to choose between the competing new DVD formats very similar to the VHS vs betamax video format wars in the 1980’s.

As then, people don’t want to find themselves trapped in a losing format, rendering their releases/purchases effectively useless for the long term.

We can only hope that the new format becomes easily accessible - and affordable - for consumers in the near future.
