Commodore 64 is reborn

by Darren Allan

Hands up who owned a Commodore 64 back in the eighties? No doubt there are a few raised mitts out there, ours included.

Oh how we loved to attempt to write rubbish Basic programs on it, and play Paradroid for endless hours (what a game…)

Anyway, nostalgia aside, the humble C64 is due to make a 21st Century comeback. Yes, really.

Produced by Commodore USA, the new machine will bear the C64 logo, and will be an all-in-one unit with the keyboard built-in just like the old computer. However, the similarity ends there.

The keyboard doesn’t have inch high chunky keys, nor is the unit that horrible beige colour.

It’s now silver and black, and pretty stylish looking, with specs that dwarf the original’s 64K of memory.

We’re talking an Intel quad core processor, up to 4GB of memory, and an Intel GMA 3100 chipset powering the visuals. It also comes with a touchpad and built-in optical drive.

The new computer is due this spring, so any time soon.

Now all we need is for another company to produce the ZX Spectrum for 2010, and we can go back to arguing about which is the best all over again.
