iPad cannibalises laptop sales in the US
by Darren Allan
There’s no doubt that the iPad has been a success story since its launch back in April.
Apple’s tablet shifted in excess of 3 million units in its first three months, and analysts have estimated that it will easily exceed sales of 10 million by the time 2010 comes to a close.
However, it would seem these sales aren’t carving out a fresh new market amongst gadget fans, but the booming figures are actually cutting deeply into the sales of laptops, in the States at any rate.
The CEO of US retail giant Best Buy told the Wall Street Journal that the company’s internal sales data showed that the iPad has “cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%”.
That’s quite a drop, and sales being halved in terms of portables isn’t going to help those PC manufacturers who are struggling a bit in the still pervading economic doom and gloom.
Best Buy is expecting both the iPad, and the freshly price slashed and revamped Kindle e-reader to do well in the run up to Christmas.
