New CBI chief calls for growth

by Jan Harris

The CBI’s new director general, John Cridland, who took over from Richard Lambert today, has acknowledged the need for spending cuts but has also called for a simultaneous focus on growth.

Mr Cridland has said that the necessary framework to allow business to grow must be put in place by the government and that it must ‘put its foot to the floor’ to ensure that Britain is a great investment destination.

With an estimated one million jobs at risk as a result of the government’s austerity measures, Mr Cridland is working with the coalition to develop plans to create investment, exports and jobs.

In the three months to December the UK economy contracted by 0.5%, leading to calls for the cost savings programme to be slowed down.
