SMEs favour Facebook for marketing
by Jan Harris
Facebook has become the marketing tool of choice for small businesses, according to MerchantCircle, a US-based online business network.
Seventy per cent of the 8,400 businesses surveyed by MerchantCircle used Facebook to promote their business last year, compared with 50 per cent in 2009, and 32 per cent said they used geolocation service Facebook Places.
Facebook overtook Google for the first time, with Google being used by 66 percent of businesses for marketing purposes.
Facebook’s popularity is at least partly because it is easy to use and inexpensive.
Predictably, the rising use of Facebook as a marketing tool has led to the use of more traditional marketing, such as print advertising and Yellow Pages, to fall by between 13 and 18 percent.
The popularity of direct mail has fallen from 39 percent to 28 percent.
