Mozilla has released the first beta version of its upgraded Firefox Internet browser.
The new version of the browser is designed to be easier to use than the earlier version and features enhanced security, including the ability to integrate antivirus software with downloads.
Other security features include the verification of Web site identities with one click; automatic testing to ensure plug-ins aren’t older versions found to be insecure; and support for Windows Vista parental controls.
The browser is also able to run Web-based applications even when the computer is disconnected from a network.
Mozilla has also improved web page rendering with an upgrade to the core Gecko rendering engine, which is responsible for interpreting Web page instructions and drawing text and graphics onto the screen.
The changes aim to improve both speed and stability, and also focus on code simplification and sustainability. Support for colour profiles is provided, allowing users to see photos in true-colour.
Firefox 3 beta 1 can be downloaded from Mozilla’s site for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Mozilla hasn’t yet released a date for the release of the final version of Firefox 3.
