Arizona State University has announced that students will test a new product by a major internet company, which will be launched later this year. The product includes 3D-modelling and video gaming features.
The university has an ongoing relationship with Google, and there are growing rumours that the company in question is Google, and the product to be tested, an online virtual universe based on Google’s satellite imagery software.
The new product could rival Linden Research’s highly popular ‘Second Life’3-D virtual world.
Speculation grew from a blog post this year from Benchmark Capital partner, Michael Eisenberg, who said he had heard rumours that Google was working on turning Google Earth, a virtual model of the globe created using satellite images, into a virtual world.
