Dell Launches Ubuntu PCs

Computers & Internet

Dell Inc has responded to demands from Linux enthusiasts with the US launch of three computer systems, including one notebook, with the Ubuntu Linux operating system pre-installed.

The systems will be released in the UK and Europe when Dell is satisfied that customer support is in place. It is currently preparing troubleshooting scripts in different languages.

The move gives Dell customers a third choice when purchasing a new PC – a machine with no operating system, on which they can install one of their own chosing; a machine with Windows pre-installed or a machine with Ubuntu Linux already installed.

The three models incorporating the open-source operating system are Inspiron E1505n which retails for $539; the Dimension E520n, priced at $599; and the XPS 410n for $849.

The Inspiron E1505n laptop has no internet connection other than wireless. It has 512KB of memory, an 80GB drive and a 15.4-inch display.

The Dimension E520n and XPS 410n desktops both have 250GB drives, 1GB of memory and 10/100 Ethernet connections. While the Dimension E520n has a 17-inch display, the higher-priced XPS 410n benefits from a 19-inch display.
