Google aims to be carbon-neutral by 2008

Search engine Google has partnered with international environmental organisation The °Climate Group, in order to take forward its aim to become carbon neutral by 2008.

Google, with help from The °Climate Group, plans to reduce its energy consumption, increase its use of renewable energy and offset any additional carbon consumption through accredited schemes.

Google is understood to have installed solar panels on its Mountain View headquarters. These will generate 1.6MW of electricity. The company aims to generate 50MW of energy – enough energy to power 50,000 homes – by 2012.

Because Google is such a high-profile company, the °Climate Group expects its campaign to have a cascading effect that will have an impact beyond the business.

Googles plan includes an interest in accelerating the development of cleaner technologies by investing in innovative projects such as plug-in hybrid cars (plug-ins).

The green campaign will generate significant cost savings for Google, which has been working to improve its energy efficiency since 2001.

Its datacentres already use half the power of conventional centres, as they are designed with an efficient power supply and evaporative cooling rather than air conditioning.

Any remaining deficiency will be made up through cleaner energy sources, stringent planning for new centres and monitored offsetting activities.
