Microsoft offers Vista downgrade option

Microsoft has changed its licencing terms, making it easier for PC manufacturers to allow customers who purchase machines with Vista installed, to switch to the earlier Windows XP operating system if they wish to.

The offer only applies to Windows Vista Business and Ultimate versions and Microsoft is letting PC makers decide how they want to make Windows XP available.

Fujitsu has already started including an XP disc in the box with its laptops and tablets, while Hewlett-Packard will configure some of its business machines to include the XP Pro restore disc, for a minimal or no charge.

Although buyers of Vista Business and Vista Ultimate Edition have always had the right to downgrade to XP, this was challenging under the previous licencing terms.

Microsoft now allows computer manufacturers which sell pre-activated Vista machines, to order Windows XP discs for inclusion in the box with the PC. The disc can also be shipped to customers without requiring additional activation.

Windows XP remains popular with businesses who are deterred from installing Vista because of its high graphics and memory requirements.
