Nominet - the domain registry that controls .uk domains - is celebrating reaching 5 million registered domains since the company was first formed, in 1996.

According to their records, Nominet registered 2000 .uk domains in their first month of operations.

However, the company now registers 144,000 domains per month.

More than 50% are for ecommerce or business information sites, and Nominet records a high renewal rate of 60%.

Nominet originally used to have the domain address “Nominet.uk”, but this was later changed to “Nominet.org.uk” to keep within registry rules.

Nominet will be 10 years old this August.
