A report in the Wall Street Journal claims that Google’s online storage service, dubbed ‘Gdrive’, should be available in a few months time. The report cites unnamed sources.
The service stores a user’s data on Google servers, the user can then access the data via the internet from any computer. Some free storage will be available, with users having to pay if they go over a specified amount.
Google’s increasing focus on hosted services is bringing it into closer competition with Microsoft.
Google has already released hosted email, word processing, spreadsheets, calendar and other programs, which are attractive to consumers, although enterprise users are yet to take up the hosted services, due to security and functionality issues.
Microsoft already provides a hosted storage solution, called Windows Live SkyDrive. It has also developed Office Live Workspace, a free online tool for viewing, sharing and storing Office documents online.
