High street sales were slow to pick up as Christmas approached - but have ended on a high note with retailers reporting greater activity over the Christmas weekend and Boxing Day.

Shopping analysts Footfall put the increased sales due to increased promotional activity, better opening times, and the fact that Christmas occured at the weekend.

The Christmas sales may provide for a bitter-sweet pill for shoppers - the Bank of England, already facing rising inflation, had been looking to Christmas sales as an indicator of economic health. The better the reports of Christmas sales, the more likely we’ll see a rise in interest rates at the Bank of England come Easter.
