Leopard causes blue screen error
Mac users have been encountering a ‘blue screen’ error after completing an upgrade installation of Apple’s newly released Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and trying to reboot.

The problem freezes the machine for an extended period, and some users have lost data stored on their Mac, such as photos.

Apple’s support site suggests the problem occurs on machines with third-party enhancement software installed, which is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

The company suggests performing an Archive and Install installation of Leopard. This procedure moves the existing Mac OS X system files to a folder named Previous System, and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X on the selected volume.

The site warns users that applications, plug-ins, and other software might require re-installing after the ‘Archive and Install’ procedure has taken place.

As an alternative solution, the support site suggests using the command line (advanced) to remove application enhancement software. Full details of both these fixes are on the site - www.apple.com/support

However, some Mac users have posted messages on discussion forums suggesting that the blue screen error is not confined to users with third party software installed on their systems.
