Microsoft linked with Skype talks

by Jan Harris

Microsoft is the latest company to be linked with a possible tie-up with Skype, according to Om Malik of GigOm.

Last week it emerged that Google was mulling a joint venture with the VoIP provider, while Facebook is believed to be considering a takeover bid.

Skype’s voice, video and sharing capabilities would give Microsoft a boost in the enterprise collaboration arena, while it would allow Facebook to add voice and video communications to its offering.

A deal could bolster Google Voice, which has so far failed to catch up with Skype’s well-established services, and it would also help Google’s expansion into the social space.

Skype became a takeover target after it delayed its planned IPO until the second half of 2011.

Skype said it hoped to raise just $100 million when it filed its intention to float in August last year, while it is believed Facebook could bid up to $4 billion for the company.
